Excluding the very disappointing first Volume, that no one should bother with, every book is definitive between it's parameters. There's a notable quote in every paragraph, and thousands of insights on many topics. And you can't get a better survey of the history of Europe and the Middle east than this series. This is the last volume, published fifty years after the original idea forced its way to the surface. Well, it became obvious that he'd have to start somewhat earlier than Napoleon if he wanted to explain Bonaparte, and thus the eleven volume "Story of Civilization" was begun. This book demonstrates the power of chronology over the historical mind, because in the late 1920's, following his very successful "A History of Philosophy", Will Durant though t he'd write a book on Napoleon. It's a thick book, but it has an immense amount to say. If your brain is up to it, there is no greater favor you can do for yourself than to read these books.If you have space for only one book on Napoleon, or the history of Europe during his lifetime, this is it. It has only been a few weeks since I finished "The Age of Napoleon" and I am looking at "Our Oriental Heritage" with hungry eyes. If that sentence speaks to you, then you are going to start loving these volumes on page one, and you will never stop loving them. If you are the kind of person who looks at that second quote and feels not only the weight of what it says, but the beauty in the way it is written, then you are going to love these books. The writing is done with the eloquence of a great bard or statesman - behold, just two quotes among thousands: By the time I finished book 11 in February of 2019, I felt like my whole entire life (and language) had been upgraded in a deep and meaningful way. I didn't make it halfway through the first book before I realized that there was simply too much that was quotable.
